Energy Viewpoints

We have spent almost two weeks learning about energy resources in class. Using your background knowledge of these resources please write a comment answering the following question.

Imagine you live in an area that has access to all nine types of energy studied in class.  If you were in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, which energy resource would you select?  Please explain why.  In your explanation of why, include two specific pieces of evidence to support your selection and one specific piece of evidence that is an admission of a negative for this type of energy.

  1. I would most likely choice hydropower because it is a clean source, also about 71% of the earths surface is water. It also flows at a constant rate. One bad thing about hydropower is it can be very expensive to build.

  2. The energy resource that I would chose for my city would be biomass. There are plants and grass all around us so we could use it for biomass. It would help us with gasoline for cars and other modes of transportation. Even though the carbon footprint is big, it costs little money so we can spend more on other things our city may need. Biomass is a great way to save people and the city on money and gasoline.

  3. Blakeville is looking for a new energy resource, because their old one isn’t cutting it. If it were up to me, the energy resource I would choose to power Blakeville, would be geothermal energy. All around Blakeville, are large and small geothermal energy hot spots. These are places where a geothermal energy power plant would be good to set up. Geothermal energy is natural, with not a lot of pollution. It’s not very expensive, and its available 24 hours a day, 356 days a year. It is renewable, so once you have the energy going, it will start over after the process runs out. There are some downsides though. Geothermal energy power plants are expensive to build, although you won’t need many to power Blakeville because of it’s strength. The place where the power plant is working, will ruin the underground land, because you have to drill for geothermal energy. You can’t move the power plant after you have constructed it, but the energy can travel a good distance. There are more upsides than downsides for geothermal energy, and I think that’s what Blakeville should use as their new energy resource.

  4. I would pick solar because, even though its more expensive to buy because of the materials and installation but, if you have a larger area of the solar paneling it can produce more energy for that city. Plus, it reduces the amount of greenhouse gasses in the air so birds wont be harmed and global warming would stop.

  5. If i had to pick an energy resource to use, it would be Wind because despite the large cost it would produce lots of clean energy for the town to use. That reason would be good enough for me because it helps the environment and produces enough energy for the town.

  6. If I was in charge to pick a type of energy for an area, I’d choose wind power. I’d choose wind power because of the following advantages. First, wind has the smallest carbon footprint , which reduces pollution. Second, wind is easy to gather with wind turbines. Even though wind seems just great, it has its disadvantages. First, once wind is gathered, it can’t power very large areas. Second, wind turbines cost lots of money to make and they take up lots of space. With wind power’s advantages and disadvantages, I still believe that it would be the best for my area.

  7. Out of all of the energy resources that we talked and presented about, I would have to pick wind as the resource I would pick. This is the resource that I had presented. While studying this resource i learned that wind is the resource that is the most cheap. You only have to pay for the wind turbines. Another thing is that it leaves the smallest carbon footprint. Which is very important to the environment. The world needs carbon but too much will harm the environment. Wind leaves the smallest one, giving it a clean way to get power. One reason that is a disadvantage was that wind is weather and could happen anytime. It is unpredictable meaning you may not get wind in a while in some cases. This is the energy resource that I would pick if I had the choice for my own city.

  8. In my point of view, I would choose the geothermal energy resource. One reason being that it’s affordable for the people who are using it. I know it’s not exactly cheap to build a power plant to obtain the energy, but it will pay itself off. Also, it is natural. The only harmful effect of geothermal is drilling holes in the ground for the raw materials. Plus, it’s renewable because of the process used to obtain the energy. Through the holes drilled in the ground, we collect water from under the earth’s surface. Magma at the earth’s core heats up water, which is pumped through tubes to the power plant. When the hot water reaches the land, it turns to steam because it is exposed to the air. The steam flows to a turbine, spinning it and starting a generator. The generator gives electricity to nearby cities. One downside is that the location needing the electricity has to be close by, but there are geothermal hot spots all over the world, especially in the western hemisphere! This source is renewable because after the used water is chilled, it is pumped back into the ground to restart the process.

  9. If I had to choose an energy source to power my city I would choose hydropower. I would choose Hydro Power for two reasons. First, Hydro Power is renewable. This would save ines the city because they can use the water to power the turbines over and over again. Second, Hydro Power is cheap because its only raw material is water. The downside to Hydropower is that sometimes the dams used can cause floods. However, the only floods caused by dams are small and can easily be maintained.

  10. If I had to pick an energy resource to use, I would choose Hydro Power. Although the power plants are expensive to build, Hydro Power is very effective. Since the energy comes from moving water, the power is constant. The energy from a single power plant can power a whole city. Also, it can power almost anything, from houses to other factories and electricity. This is why I would pick Hydro Power for a main source of energy.

  11. The type energy i could use would be Hydropower. I would like to use Hydropower because it is reusable . My first reason why i would use Hydropower because if i live next to a river that has dam next to it first of all i could get energy from it . The other good thing is that is that it provides water and food , If i need to i can just go fishing a catch fish and the i ca get a bucket and have water all i need to do is clean the water . The problem is that if i live too close to the river it can flood (It doesn't flood superbad .)

  12. Although there may better sources of energy to choose from, my favorite energy source is wind. Wind is an energy source that is renewable. It creates energy using the power of wind. The reason why I even like this source is that it is clean energy. It makes a low carbon footprint which helps the environment and the global temperatures rising. It also creates a lot of energy from the wind. The disadvantage of this source is that wind is not always blowing. There could be a whole day where there is no wind so you would have to put it in a good location for the energy to be reliable. The turbines used for the energy source are also very expensive and take up a lot of space since the turbines are so big. Even though there are disadvantages, there is also a big advantage where wind is everywhere so you could place turbines almost everywhere on the earth. Even though this source has its flaws, I still would use it to power a city because of its powerful advantages.

  13. In the city of Blakeville with all of the energy choices, I would choose Wind. I would choose wind because the raw material is free and it never runs out. This would help the city because they would not have to pay for the raw material. Also, the other advantage of this is that it has the lowest carbon footprint which would help the environment a lot. The disadvantage though is that wind is expensive to transfer into energy which would cut down the city’s payments on unnecessary things.

  14. If I had access to all nine energy resources our class has studied over the past two weeks, the one I would pick would be coal. Coal is the best resource to use because it is very cheap, easy to mine, and it produces the most amount of energy of all of the nine energy resources. There are some negatives such as, it is really bad for the environment but once you look past that, it is one of the most reliable/useful energy resources out there. Aside from being the most reliable and useful energy resource, it is also very common. In coal mines, coal, as you would guess, is very easy to find and when you want to use it it is very easy to use.

  15. If I was in charge of a city that had access to all types of energy I would choose hydropower. I would choose hydropower because it has many advantages. Although it has many advantages it has some disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is it is expensive to buy a hydropower plant. Also behind the dam of a hydropower plant it can flood. Not a massive flood, but one that can be destructive. On the other side there are many advantages. One of them is that water is all over the world. Water is the raw material for hydropower so there is a lot that we can use. Another is that hydropower is clean for the world. It doesn’t harm the environment because water is natural. A last advantage is that it is a very powerful resource. It can power many homes at a time. Hydropower is a really good energy resource to use.

  16. If I were in charge of selecting an energy resource for a city, I would pick biofuel as the resource. Biofuel is a renewable energy resource so we will not run out of it. This will be more useful because we can use it for as long as we want. Unlike non-renewable resources, if we run out of the raw materials then there is no use for the resource. The raw materials of biofuel are very easy to collect since they consist of plants and animal manure, these materials will stay in use for along time. The process of changing it into energy doesn’t take very long so you can have it for use all the time. Biofuels production does help reduce greenhouse gases which will make it a good source for the environment. A bad part about biofuel is that anytime that food crops are not grown because biofuel crops are being grown, there is a net reduction in the amount of food available. With all that in thought I would choose biofuel as the energy resource.

  17. The energy resource I would use is to power the city would probably have to be is wind. I would choose wind because it makes the smallest carbon footprint out of all the energy resources. I would also choose this because the city can have all wind energy resources. So having wind it would make a smaller carbon footprint and it can power the city. So at a maximum you would only have to put one or two wind turbines. Also wind is very powerful and can power a whole town. The price of wind is not that expensive either. So the energy resource I would choose to power the city is wind.

  18. I think you should use the wind resource because it is cheap and has a small carbon footprint. I think those are the 2 best reasons because they are what most people want. I think they would want it to cheap because nobody likes to pay more for something when there is another thing that is cheaper. I also think you should use wind because it has a small carbon footprint, that is important because today people are very protective of the environment. Those matter when decideding my opinion are what really matter when you are getting a new resource.

  19. If I wanted my city to have the best energy resource, I would choose geothermal energy. Geothermal energy can provide steam, hot water for pools, and this energy can create amazing hot springs. Geothermal energy is really expense, some power plants can cost up to $2,500.00 but it is well worth the money. One power plant can power an average city. The power plant doesn’t take up much space either. Another reason to choose geothermal energy is because it is a renewable source so we will never run out of it. Unless the Earth blows up but then we would not need geothermal energy. All you need to make geothermal energy is the Earths core, magma, and water and a power plant. You might damage the Earth's crust when digging wells but you can fill the hole up with dirt again. I want my city to have hot water when they wake up in the morning to take their hot showers. That is why I am choosing geothermal energy for my city.

  20. If I could choose a energy resource, it would be wind. Wind is a renewable energy resource that is caused by spinning turbines. I would choose it because it leaves the smallest carbon footprint, which is eco-friendly. Also, it has the least equipment. Even though it is expensive, this would be my choice.

  21. If I had to choose one energy resource to use I would choose wind because wind is reusable and Wind is really cheap other than buying the resources to make the turbine to power the wind to produce the electricity. I also would choose wind because if you are at higher levels of altitude the more wind and that give the turbine more power to produce more electricity.

  22. The energy source I would choose is Hydropower for several key reasons. First Hydropower is a renewable source of energy. It can be used over and over again. Also hydropower is a clean source of energy so it doesn't hurt the environment or the air. This source of energy can be turned into electricity which is used for many household items. Hydropower is also the most used renewable energy source in the world. The only bad thing about hydropower is that the dams are expensive to build. Clearly, I think Hydropower is the best energy resource.

  23. I think that nuclear energy is the best source to use. Although it can be dangerous it is very clean and it. It is non-renewable but it can be used for many different things. Nuclear energy is easy to get and access which is why i chose it. It is very efficient. It can power a whole city. I think that nuclear would be the best choice and by far my favorite. Ranking in the most powerful by a long shot nuclear energy is the way to go. Chose nuclear energy it is by far the best resource to use!

  24. Although all the energy resources have many advantages, I think I would choose wind. There are many reasons I would choose wind but the there are two main reasons. I would choose it because it has the smallest carbon footprint. Also I would choose wind because it is really powerful. For example, it would power 75% of Blakeville. The only disadvantage is it is very expensive.

  25. If I were to live in a city with access of all 9 energy resources, I would prefer nuclear energy for these 2 reasons. Nuclear energy is among the most productive and clean energy resources. Unlike coal, Nuclear energy does not pollute the air with harmful gases. This means it won’t hurt the surrounding environment, with the exception of the land that the power plant takes up. Another strong trait is, that nuclear energy will supply a lot of energy. Being that uranium is the only raw material, just a little pellet of uranium the size of your fingertip, can produce the same amount as 150 gallons of oil! Along with many good things there are also some disadvantages. When a neutron bombards the the nucleus of an atom, energy is released. Along with all this energy radiation can be released if not controlled. Radiation can be harmful to humans by causing birth defects and cancer. Although, nuclear energy has disadvantages, the advantage to disadvantage ratio certainly leads towards the advantage side.

  26. The energy resource that I would pick is geothermal for several reasons. First it is renewable so it can be used over and over. Next it is natural so it does not pollute the air or the environment and it will not cause health issues. Also it is not expensive for people that are using it so people will not have to pay a lot. Another reason is there are many places that we can put a power plant for geothermal power so it will not be hard to find locations for the power plants. The last reason is it can heat things and be used for electricity so it will be able to power cities. Other things that it can heat is homes, hot tubs, green houses and so on. Despite that this source is renewable and it advantages it also has two disadvantages. One is it cost a lot to build the power plants. Last the other disadvantage is it can not be transported.

  27. My first choice would be wind because of these reasons. It is a natural environment friendly because it doesn't add on to population and also doesn't hurt the land beneath it’s plates or stands. Another reason is because it has the smallest carbon footprint. Also if I was the city council and had to choice what energy to go with I would choose wind because 1 wind turbine could power a whole city. One bad thing about this resource it can cost you.

  28. I believe that Hydropower is the best energy resource because it is usable 24/7 unlike solar because the clouds block the sun and no more energy can be produced during that time. It is also renewable so it can be used over and over. There is plenty of rivers to power the whole city and it can be used at all times of year including winter because the water is flowing. It does not have a very big carbon footprint. One downside is that the dams are expensive and can cause flooding.

  29. If I were to choose one resource out of the nine resources, it would be hydropower. The reason I would choose hydropower for three main reasons, it is renewable, it powers 96% of the United States renewable energy, and because hydropower powers a lot of our homes, and we just don’t know it. First, hydropower is renewable, that means that it doesn’t put pollution into the air, like other nonrenewable resources, such as coal. Being renewable means that it will never run out. That means when all of the nonrenewable resources that we use everyday run out, then we will have renewable resources to rely on such as hydropower. Also, hydropower powers 96% of the United States renewable energy. That means that if any of our big nonrenewable resources runs out, then hydropower would be able help cover that. Hydropower plants do not use resources that pollute the air, that means that the entire process of turning the water into power for people is completely clean. Finally, people use hydropower to power their homes and they don’t know it. Once the water is turned into energy, it goes into the power lines, which then goes and powers our house and all of the things in it. This is a big step to powering our city with renewable energy, and hydropower with help do that. If I were to choose one resource out of nine resources it would be hydropower for three main reasons it is renewable, it powers 96% of the United States, and it powers a lot of our houses, and we just don’t know it. The reason that I would not choose hydropower would be for one reason, and that reason is because the process of turning the water into power for the people, is a slow process. That means it might not be able to get power to the city fast enough. Another reason would be because it is expensive to make the dams that create hydropower.

  30. If I were choosing what energy source my city was using I would use Nuclear energy. You might ask why Nuclear energy. Here’s why. Two advantages of Nuclear energy. One, Nuclear energy is one of the most powerful energy sources in the world. For example, nuclear energy can power a whole country. Also, another advantage is that Nuclear energy is not a huge pollutant because nuclear uses steam. For example, Coal energy is very powerful but it pollutes in a very bad way, whereas Nuclear is strong but does not pollute nearly as much as coal. There is a disadvantage to Nuclear energy though. Nuclear energy is very dangerous. If not maintained and used correctly something could go terribly wrong. Overall though Nuclear energy is one of the best energy sources and the one I would use for my city.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If I had a choice between all nine resources of energy I would pick nuclear energy for many reasons. First, nuclear energy is the most powerful out of all the resources. For example, one ceramic pellet used in the fission process about the size of your fingertip can produce the amount of energy that 149 gallons of oil can produce. Nuclear energy is also not that expensive after the plant is built. In 2012 the average price of nuclear energy was 75 cents per kilowatt hour. The main disadvantage to nuclear energy is it can harm people and the environment if not done correctly. If spent fuels are not stored properly high amounts of harmful radiation can leak out. However there are many regulations nuclear power plants have to follow to ensure safety. If you are still skeptical about the safety of nuclear energy you should know that scientist estimate you would receive five times more radiation from computers and TVs than you would if you lived next to a nuclear powerplant. If nuclear energy is done safely it is definitely the number one energy source.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If I had to choose one energy source out of all the nine, it would be nuclear energy for many reasons. Nuclear power plants are spread all around the globe in 30 countries with over 400 individual power plants. One reason why so many people have nuclear is because how inexpensive it is. You only have to pay 66 cents per kWh according to the World Nuclear Association. Another reason to pick nuclear is because of its low carbon footprint. A power plant only lets out 16 grams of carbon dioxide for every kilowatt per hour of electricity. If you don’t know what that means, it is good for the environment and doesn’t pollute the air. Even though it doesn’t pollute the air, it still can send radiation off if the structure isn’t built correctly. This radiation can cause harmful disease and sickness to the animals, plants, environment, and of course, humans surrounding the area. I assure you if you have skilled engineers who know what they’re doing when building the power plant, nuclear energy is the resource for you!

  33. If I was on city council and picked an energy resource it would be biomass. Biomass is a reusable resource that is fuel made of plants and water. The one problem is that biomass uses lots of water, but thats ok because water is reuseable.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Of the energy resources we learned about, I would choose hydropower. I would choose this because hydropower doesn’t create pollution. Also, hydropower is very resourceful because the water can be used over and over again. The disadvantages are that it can cost a lot of money. That is why I would choose hydropower.
